Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
